The Impact of Misuse of Medicine on Health

The research therefore aims at: **Analysis of the effects of Misuse of Medicine on Health**

Modern society is characterized by an unprecedented rate of development coupled with the improper usage of medicines being a pressing issue that affects the health of multiple people as of now. Thus, although medicine is aimed at relieving from pain and treating diseases, its improper application results in critical outcome.

However, there is a problem with the consumption of antibiotics more specifically, their improper use. Misuse of Antibiotics through their use or prescription where they are not required, has led to the emergence of bacteria that are resistant to these drugs, thus being a major threat to health all over the world. This increases the complexity of infections which were previously curable and may result to longer hospital duration, increased charges, and sometimes death.

Other areas that need intervention includes, use of non-prescribed aspirin and prescription pain killer. Such use of these drugs not only results in the development of addiction to the substances but also raise the propensity of overdose and other health hazards. Due to this, communalities with opioid crisis have become a global concern thereby proving the disastrous impact of medicine misuse on lives, homes, and societies.

In addition, self-prescribing of drugs without consulting a physician not only leads to the development of serious side effects of the drugs, allergies and interaction between the drug taken and other drugs that may be taken concurrently. The situations listed above erode the efficacy of the treatment and endanger patients’ lives.

To improve this situation there is an evident need for the continuation of public education campaigns on proper use of medicines, hasening work on setting the required restrictive measures concerning prescription and selling of medicines, and increasing public awareness of the potential dangers of improper use. To achieve optimum results of the utilisation of medicine and reduce the risk and consequences of harm to the common or individual interest, it calls for the cooperation of both healthcare practitioners and policy makers.

Therefore, it is apparent that although medicine is an important measure in the fight against diseases, its abuse has dire consequences. Therefore, it is crucial that the general population acquire knowledge and duty when utilizing medications for the preservation of individual and communal health.
